From Aberystwyth to Davos: Martin Stoddart awarded honorary doctorate
AO Research Institute Davos (ARI) Vice Director and Program Leader for Regenerative Orthopaedics, Martin Stoddart, has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Aberystwyth University in recognition of his outstanding contributions to healthcare research and regenerative orthopaedics.
The honorary degree was conferred during the University's graduation ceremonies on July 16, 2026. For Stoddart, the honour carries special meaning because his scientific journey began at the Welsh university. He studied Biology at Aberystwyth University, graduating in 1995, before undertaking an MPhil in Cartilage Biology. It was through that research that he first came to Davos and the AO Research Institute, establishing a connection that would ultimately shape his career.
Reflecting on receiving the honorary doctorate, Stoddart said: "My academic journey began at Aberystwyth, and the link between Aberystwyth and the ARI brought me here in the first place. To be recognized in this way is really amazing."
After completing his MPhil, Stoddart went on to earn a PhD in Clinical Oncology from the University of Nottingham, investigating the formation of new blood vessels in cancerous tumours. He subsequently pursued research positions in Switzerland and the United States before returning to the ARI. Since 2020, he has served as Program Leader for Regenerative Orthopaedics and today also holds the role of Vice Director of the ARI.
Throughout his career, Stoddart has built an international reputation for pioneering research at the intersection of cell biology, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine. His work seeks to better understand the biological mechanisms that drive healing and regeneration, with the goal of improving outcomes for patients with musculoskeletal disorders.
The honorary doctorate recognizes both his scientific achievements and his broader contribution to advancing medical research on a global scale. It also highlights the enduring relationship between Aberystwyth University and the AO Research Institute Davos, a connection that began nearly three decades ago and continues to foster scientific excellence and international collaboration.
