Following the successful launch of the program in 2026, the AO Foundation (AO), the AO Research Institute Davos (ARI), and the Asia Pacific Orthopaedic Association (APOA) are delighted to announce the second edition of the ARI-APOA Research Fellowship.

The fellowship will select five motivated researchers with a strong interest in orthopedic trauma care and musculoskeletal research. Participants will have the opportunity to collaborate with leading experts, expand their research knowledge, and gain hands-on experience in a cutting-edge scientific environment.

The program includes a two-week immersive fellowship at the internationally renowned AO Research Institute Davos (ARI) in Switzerland in September 2027.

About the AO Research Institute Davos (ARI)

AO Research Institute (ARI) is part of the AO Foundation, based in Davos, Switzerland.

Primary Aim: To advance orthopedic patient care through innovative, translational research and development—bridging fundamental science with clinically relevant solutions in areas such as trauma, musculoskeletal disorders, spine, craniomaxillofacial conditions, infection, and congenital disorders.

 

Fellowship Experience

During the fellowship, participants will:

  • Experience world-class orthopaedic Research and Development at ARI
  • Learn cutting-edge translational research methodologies
  • Refine and strengthen your research idea
  • Receive expert feedback and guidance
  • Build a global network of AO and APOA peers

This immersive experience enables fellows to deepen their understanding of trauma, biomechanics, and musculoskeletal regeneration, while expanding their practical research skills. Fellows will also become part of a global network of researchers and institutions, fostering long-term professional relationships.

Fellows will attend the program alongside the Stephan Perren Fellows from AO Trauma Europe, Southern Africa, and the Middle East and Northern Africa, encouraging international peer exchange and collaboration.

Fellowship Date: September 6–17, 2027

 

Stipend and Financial Support

The fellowship provides financial support to cover travel (fix amount) and lodging costs for the two-week program:

  • ARI / AO NPR: Covers housing in Davos
  • APOA: Covers
    • International travel expenses
    • Visa application costs
    • Daily living costs (approx. CHF1,500 for two weeks)

Fellows are responsible for organizing their own travel, in agreement with APOA. This includes managing entry requirements for Switzerland (e.g., visas), using the APOA-provided stipend. ARI and AO HR will supply the necessary documents for visa applications.

 

Eligibility

The ARI–APOA Research Fellowship invites applications from clinicians passionate about advancing orthopedic trauma care through research.

 

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be qualified surgeons or surgeons in training, aged 45 years or below, specializing in trauma, orthopaedics, spine surgery, or a related surgical field, with a strong interest in research.
  • Be members of the Asia Pacific Orthopaedic Association (APOA)
  • Be members of the AO Foundation under any clinical division
  • Demonstrate proficiency in both spoken and written English
