AO Milestones launches first adaptive online learning experience in North America
The first step in AO Trauma’s AO Milestones program is now available for orthopedic trauma residents (postgraduate years one through three) and residency program directors in North America. This first step is an adaptive online learning experience, Fundamentals of Osteosynthesis and Hip.
The adaptive learning program is designed to emulate the optimal teaching approach of a one-on-one tutor, adapting to the needs of the learner in real time using proven data analytics and intelligent technologies.
To ensure that instruction is valid and comprehensive, the curriculum was mapped to both Accreditation Council for Medical Education (ACGME) Milestones and entrustable professional activities (EPAs). All content was edited by Drs Brett Crist and Chad Coles in collaboration with other expert authors from North America.
"The Fundamentals of Osteosynthesis and Hip adaptive learning program provides learners with high quality, outcome-based instruction that meets ACGME requirements for those topics,” Crist explained. “Learners work at their own pace in engaging multimedia formats while the training adjusts itself around what they already know."
In a short video, Coles introduced the adaptive learning program and addressed future modules.
About adaptive learning and AO Milestones
Each adaptive learning module utilizes:
- Instructional videos
- High-quality illustrations
- Interactive assessment questions
- Biomechanics simulations, such as OSapp
Instruction is gamified through features such as a points system, providing users with additional challenges and a way to track their progress. Online learning modules can be accessed on computers, phones, and tablets, and utilize a mix of text, images, and videos.
Fundamentals of Osteosynthesis and Hip is the first—but not the only—AO Milestones adaptive learning program. Additional topics will be launched on a rolling basis, covering the ankle, distal radius, diaphyseal tibia, femur, and elbow/forearm shaft.
The AO Milestones program builds knowledge through online adaptive learning—and extensive skills training and skills assessment experiences are on the horizon.
