The kickoff meeting for the INDEED (INtervertebral Disc EnginEereD) project took place on February 5. 

The project aims to develop standardized three-dimensional (3D) models of the intervertebral disc capable of recapitulating disc features to independently study the effect of mechanical and biological insults on disc degeneration and regeneration. Advanced biofabrication and 3D printing techniques will be employed to create 3D disc models using natural disc components at physiological concentration.

The project will create tools to better understand disc degeneration, which is a major source of suffering and disability. Additionally, the know-how developed will contribute towards progressing the field of tissue engineering of musculoskeletal tissues.

The project, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, is coordinated by Dr Matteo D'Este and comprises partners from ETH Zurich (Switzerland), La Sorbonne University Paris (France) and INSERM Nantes (France).
