Open to all: Craniomaxillofacial Trauma & Reconstruction journal will go open access in 2025
AO CMF members benefit from attractive APC
AO CMF and the editors in chief of its journal, Craniomaxillofacial Trauma & Reconstruction (CMTR), are delighted to announce that the clinical division’s official scientific publication transition to an open access publishing model on January 1, 2025.
A peer-reviewed journal, CMTR is devoted to the study and treatment of craniomaxillofacial (CMF) conditions, including diagnosis, operative and non-operative treatment options, surgical techniques, emerging research, evidence-based therapy, and clinical developments.
The shift to open access, in collaboration with the Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), marks a significant step toward enhancing the visibility and accessibility of research. Founded 1996 in Basel, Switzerland, MDPI is a pioneer in open-access publishing and has rapidly expanded. It publishes a wide range of academic journals across various disciplines, making significant contributions to the accessibility of research worldwide—a perfect partner for AO CMF and CMTR.
What is open access?
Open access means free access to and reuse of scientific information, removing financial, legal, and technical barriers to accessing published scientific articles. Everyone can read, download, copy, distribute, print, search for, and within the information. It is a publishing model for scholarly communication that makes research information available at no cost, unlike the traditional subscription model under which readers access academic information for a fee.
Impact and opportunities
CMTR received its first impact factor earlier in 2024, and it is set to increase its impact in the academic community. The editors in chief encourage submissions of high-level articles, including original research, guidelines, white papers, and reviews, and invites the CMF community to actively engage and contribute to the field’s body of knowledge.
“By following the Open Access publishing model, we aim to increase the visibility and reuse of academic research results,” CMTR Editor-in-Chief Mike Leung, Hong Kong, China.
“CMTR received its first impact factor earlier in 2024, and we envisage raising that impact factor in the upcoming years as we move towards Open Access,” Editor-in-Chief Kathy Fan, London, United Kingdom, added.
Rigorous and expedited peer-review process
For Editor-in-Chief Florian Thieringer (Basel, Switzerland), CMTR’s commitment to excellence is clear.
“At CMTR, we are committed to maintaining the highest standards of scholarly integrity and ethics while ensuring rapid publication of cutting-edge research,” he said. “Recently, we assembled a distinguished team of internationally renowned clinicians and researchers as associate editors, ensuring a high-quality review process for all submitted articles."
The optimized peer-review process is designed to be both rigorous and streamlined, facilitating a swift transition from submission to acceptance. Once an article is accepted, it is promptly published online, ensuring immediate visibility. Furthermore, all articles are indexed in major databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. This broad indexing enhances accessibility and increases citation potential worldwide, supporting CMTR authors in making a significant and timely impact in their fields.
Attractive article processing fees
With MDPI, AO CMF negotiated very attractive article processing charges (APCs) for AO CMF members and nonmembers.
With a significant APC subsidy for AO CMF members, AO CMF is sending a strong message of full support to the CMTR journal. The member APC for 2025 is CHF 900.00.
Authors from low-income countries (LIC) can benefit from even lower fees, which have been set at CHF 650.00. To have the member APC applied, either the first or last author must be an AO CMF member for a minimum three months prior to article acceptance. The nonmember APC is also highly attractive at only CHF 1,500.00 per accepted article.
With MDPI, AO CMF has found a strong and highly experienced publishing partner. MDPI was a pioneer in scholarly, open-access publishing and has supported academic communities since 1996. It currently publishes approximately 450 open-access journals. AO CMF will remain the sole owner of the journal and will have full control over all editorial processes.

Looking ahead
The editors in chief look forward to receiving a diverse range of submission to continue the growth of the CMTR journal. The move to an open access publishing model broadens the reach of CMF research and helps the academic community more effectively share knowledge more.
AO CMF is eager to embark on this new journey, enhancing research accessibility and impact. Stay tuned for further insights from CMTR editors in chief and a statement from MDPI about the collaborative future.
