TMJ reconstruction in growing patients: autologous experience vs prosthesis

In this AO CMF Study Club session, the key challenges of pediatric TMJ reconstruction presented by Ajoy Roychoudhury, who emphasizes the need to account for facial growth and long-term function. He discusses different reconstruction options, highlighting costochondral grafts as a preferred approach due to their growth potential, while also addressing ways to reduce complications such as re-ankylosis and graft overgrowth.

Learning objectives:

  • indication for pediatric TMJ reconstruction
  • pediatric TMJ reconstruction using autologous tissue
  • strategies to incorporate growth (costochondral grafts, transport disc distraction osteogenesis)
  • strategies to reduce heterotopic bone at reconstruction site
  • pediatric alloplastic total joint replacement.

Managing Primary and Secondary Pediatric Midfacial Trauma

In this Expert Case discussion, Damir Matic, Mohamed Abdulazeem, Mohamed Amin, Amr Amin Ghanem and Amir Elbarbary are presenting webinar about management of primary and secondary pediatric midfacial trauma.

Key challenges in managing pediatric maxillary and orbital trauma are outlined, highlighting that facial growth is largely genetically determined and that the upper face and orbits have limited remodeling capacity. As a result, precise anatomic reduction at the time of injury is especially critical in younger children. It is further emphasizes that early, high-energy trauma poses the greatest risk for long-term growth disturbance, underscoring the importance of meticulous, age-appropriate surgical techniques, judicious use of hardware, and timely intervention—particularly in orbital emergencies—to ensure optimal functional and aesthetic outcomes as the child grows.

3D Virtual Surgical Planning (VSP) in Orthognathic Surgery: Advantages, Disadvantages and Pitfalls

Virtual surgical planning and patient-specific 3D-printed guides and plates have transformed orthognathic and complex cranio-maxillofacial surgery. This AO CMF Study Club session held by Daniel Buchbinder, Rafael Cypriano, Belinda Beltrán and Juan Carlos Orellana, focuses on the digital workflow that replaces traditional physical models with precise 3D virtual models fused from imaging and optical scans, enabling surgeons to plan osteotomies and occlusion entirely in software and then transfer that plan to the operating room. It also highlights advantages such as improved accuracy, efficiency, safety, and reduced operating time, while noting limitations including inability to modify plans intraoperatively and technology costs.
A global survey of surgeons shows widespread adoption of computer-assisted planning, primarily for accuracy and efficiency in complex skeletal corrections.
