Leadership Education Program 2021

Leadership skill training for experienced faculty members and chairpersons elected into governance or education roles
  • Description

    Participants will engage in discussions and interactively exchange knowledge on practical applications for leading and managing educational initiatives in the AO.

    Those participating in this program will be able to self-assess their leadership behaviors, apply models of those behaviors to real-world examples, advocate for education, and facilitate continuous learning and improvement.

    This invitation-only program consists of: 

    Online preparations—Five weeks prior

    Participants prepare for the face-to-face event with online self-assessments and self-study materials such as video examples and discussions. Topics covered include leadership traits, building and motivating teams, and facilitating change.

    Face-to-face event—Two days

    Participants conduct interactive sessions beginning with a self-assessment of leadership style followed by small group activities. Short plenary sessions allow group members to share experiences and reflect upon future plans and changes.

    Online follow-up–Ongoing

    Participants perform a final self-assessment, and are encouraged to contribute to ongoing online discussions with their peers.

  • Learning objectives
    Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to
    Apply educational principles and best practices to various settings
    Describe leadership traits and behaviors that are necessary to be successful in the AO and will make AO successful
    Build and manage teams effectively
    Plan, organize, direct, and control resources, tasks, budgets and processes to ensure successful implementation of strategies in the AO
    Communicate effectively as a leader
    Create, facilitate, and manage educational change within the AO
    Advocate for education and its impact on healthcare, inside and outside of the AO
    Enable AO to be a learning organization
  • Prerequisites

    Participants must

    • Hold a current clinical division membership
    • Be an approved clinical division faculty member
    • Have completed the Faculty and Chair Education Programs
    • Hold a governance position
  • Who should attend

    Members of AO NA committees, commissions, regional and international boards, regional education teams, and training teams, as well as those in governance leadership roles.
