New discussions around GSJ articles going live on myAO
Join the conversation!
Research does not end when a paper is published. Some of the most valuable insights emerge when clinicians, researchers, reviewers, and authors come together to discuss what the findings mean for clinical practice. To encourage these conversations, AO Spine and the Global Spine Journal (GSJ) are expanding discussion activities within the GSJ group on myAO.
- AO Spine and Global Spine Journal are expanding article discussions in the GSJ group on myAO to connect research with clinical practice.
- Surgeons can discuss new GSJ papers, challenge interpretations, share experience, and engage with global experts.
- Gain practical insights, evaluate evidence, increase research visibility, and contribute to spine care decision-making.
- Ongoing article discussions will launch with disc replacement surgery, leading into the GSJ Virtual Spine Journal Club on October 1, 2026.
The GSJ group is designed as a dedicated space where spine professionals can explore research beyond the published manuscript. Members can discuss recently published GSJ articles, challenge interpretations, share clinical experience, debate controversial topics, and connect with colleagues from around the world.
This will also be a great platform to boost the impact of your own research and bring more visibility to it among spine professionals and researchers!
The initiative will be moderated by GSJ Deputy Editor Dr David Gendelberg, who will help guide discussions, introduce thought-provoking topics, and encourage meaningful exchanges between members. Discussions will range from newly published GSJ articles and landmark studies to controversial questions that continue to divide opinion within the spine community.
Rather than just asking, "Did you see this paper?", the goal is to dig deeper into important questions:
- Would these findings change your clinical decision-making?
- Does the evidence support current practice patterns?
- Where are the gaps in the literature?
- What should researchers investigate next?
- What would you do differently based on your own experience?
Members are also encouraged to start their own discussions. If there is a paper that challenged your thinking, a clinical controversy you would like to explore, or a question you have been debating with colleagues, the GSJ group is the place to bring it to the global spine community.
Disc replacement surgery 25 years later
The first discussion on disc replacement will also serve as a warmup to the next GSJ Virtual Spine Journal Club taking place on October 1, 2026, on “Disc replacement surgery 25 years later”, moderated by Drs Scott Blumnethal, Rick Guyer, and Jack Zigler.
The following papers will be presented and discussed:
- Total Disc Replacement Versus Anterior-Posterior Interbody Fusion in the Lumbar Spine and Lumbosacral Junction: A Cost Analysis with presenter Dr Robby Turk
- Are Patients with Segmental Cervical Kyphosis Appropriate Candidates for Cervical Disc Arthroplasty (CDA)? A Clinical and Radiographic Analysis Compared to Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF) with presenter Dr Alexander Ruditsky
- Long-Term Outcomes of Cervical Disc Replacement and Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion A Review of FDA IDE Trials With Real-World Comparison with presenter Dr Daniel Coban
- Comparison of Lumbar Total Disc Replacement with Surgical Spinal Fusion for the Treatment of Single-Level Degenerative Disc Disease: A Meta-Analysis of 5-Year Outcomes from Randomized Controlled Trials with presenter Dr Justin Bird
Great research deserves more than a glance; it deserves a thorough conversation, and it deserves to be implemented in practice.
