Interview with the new Chairperson of the AO VET Community Development Commission: Shanti Jha

August 5, 2026

Following his appointment as Chairperson of the AO VET Community Development Commission on 1 July 2026, we spoke with him about his goals for the Commission, the importance of community engagement, and how he hopes to strengthen connections across the global AO VET network.

Question: AO VET has a strong but diverse global community—what is your vision to grow and activate this network, particularly in underrepresented regions or segments?

Shanti Sha: My vision is to build a truly connected global AO VET community where every member, regardless of geography, gender, career stage, or background, feels they have equal opportunities to contribute and grow. I would focus on identifying underrepresented regions and understanding their specific needs rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach. By working closely with regional leaders and AO Access liaisons, we can create tailored initiatives, mentorship opportunities, and local champions who can engage members within their own contexts. I also believe that diversity strengthens innovation. By creating pathways for emerging leaders, encouraging self-nomination, and providing transparent opportunities for involvement, AO VET can continue building a community where participation is based on competence and commitment while reflecting the diversity of our global profession.

Many organizations have members, but not necessarily active communities—how will you turn passive participants into engaged contributors?

People become engaged when they feel they belong and when they see that their contributions matter. My approach would be to create multiple entry points for participation. Not everyone is ready to become faculty immediately, but they can mentor, join working groups, contribute case discussions, share experiences, or participate in community projects, becoming AO VET AMBASSADORS. Recognition is equally important. Celebrating member contributions, highlighting diverse role models, and creating opportunities for members to influence initiatives encourages ownership. Mentorship also plays a central role. Members who receive guidance are much more likely to become mentors themselves, creating a sustainable cycle of engagement.

From a veterinarian's perspective, why should they invest their time and energy in AO VET beyond attending courses?

Courses are only the beginning. AO VET offers lifelong professional development through mentorship, leadership opportunities, research collaborations, networking, faculty development, and access to an international community of experts. I have been a direct beneficiary of this process and would like to pass it on and encourage my fellow AO VET faculty to continue to do that. Being part of AO VET means joining a network that supports continuous learning while providing opportunities to contribute to education, innovation, and improved patient care. The value lies not only in what members receive, but also in the opportunity to give back, share expertise, and help shape the future of veterinary orthopedics worldwide.

How do you plan to leverage digital platforms to create a sense of belonging and peer exchange, rather than just broadcasting information?

Digital platforms should facilitate conversations rather than simply deliver announcements- bite-sized conversations. I would encourage interactive discussions around clinical cases, mentorship circles, expert Q&A sessions, regional forums, podcasts, webinars, and opportunities for members to share experiences and lessons learned. Storytelling is particularly powerful. Initiatives similar to AO Access' 'Voices for Change' demonstrate how sharing personal experiences builds trust and connection across cultures and career stages. The goal is for members to log in because they want to participate, not simply because new content has been posted.

AO is built on a strong purpose and values—how will you ensure that this 'spirit of AO' is not only taught, but lived within the global AO VET community?

The spirit of AO is best transmitted through people and experiences rather than presentations. Mentorship is one of the strongest ways to pass on AO values. When experienced members demonstrate collaboration, scientific excellence, respect, and inclusiveness, these values naturally become part of the culture. I would also ensure that leadership opportunities are transparent, inclusive, and based on merit. Celebrating collaborative behavior, encouraging respectful dialogue across cultures, and creating safe environments where everyone feels valued reinforces these values daily. Ultimately, culture is reflected in how people interact with one another. If every member feels welcomed, respected, supported, and empowered to contribute, then the spirit of AO is truly being lived.
