Histological analysis is an important outcome measure for both in vitro and in vivo studies. As such, we aim to carry out histological processing and analysis to maximize the potential output from each study. To accomplish this, we support investigators with early-stage discussions to effectively plan projects and we provide histological processing, analysis and practical training where necessary. Routine protocols for sample processing and analysis are implemented and can be specifically tailored to individual project requirements, based on the wide variety of biomaterials and staining protocols that may be used in the study of musculoskeletal tissues.

We have extensive experience and are highly skilled in tissue processing, imaging, and analysis of decalcified and undecalcified tissue samples, with or without implants. For the preparation of hard tissue sections, resin-embedding is routinely carried out. In addition to commonly used equipment such as the paraffin microtome and cryostat, we have specialized equipment for the processing of the hard resin-embedded materials. The methods we use have been developed and modified over the years in our laboratory.
