At the German Congress of Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery (DKOU 26.–29. Oktober 2010) in Berlin the surgeons Peter Strohm and David Kubosch from the Universitätsklinikum Freiburg together with Christoph Sprecher from the AO Research Institute Davos and Prof Stefan Milz from the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich were awarded with the innovation award for the manuscript entitled Influence of graft cross sectional area on graft fracture rate after anterior lumbar spinal fusion. The team correlated the results from a sheep model with the patient outcome. It was shown that the risk of a graft fracture can be reduced below 0.1% if the graft size is larger than 23.9% of the end plate size from neighbouring vertebra.

During his presentation Peter Strohm spoke of his appreciation for the support from the AO Foundation and the professional collaboration with the Tissue Morphology group. In the past four years the project team from the University Freiburg and AO Research Institute Davos (ARI) published several articles and between them successfully accomplished a habilitation and a dissertation.
