Musculoskeletal Infection – Focus Area Overview
Musculoskeletal infection is one of the most common complications associated with surgical fixation of bones fractured during trauma. The Musculoskeletal Infection Focus Area performs research into two clinically important aspects of musculoskeletal infection:
- Clinically relevant preclinical models, which are used to investigate novel implant designs or materials
- Improved diagnostic tests to provide rapid, accurate and safe diagnosis of infection
Our experience involves bacterial culture, biofilm culture, in vitro assessment of bacterial adhesion to standard and antimicrobial-containing materials; evaluation of specific infection recognizing imaging agents; and numerous preclinical models for in vivo studies.
