The Key to Success

Over the past few years, clinical research education has become an increasingly important and integral part of AOCID. Through clinical research, the AO Foundation can develop a network of well-trained surgeons who can produce high quality evidence in clinical research, which leads to publications in journals with higher impact, and improved patient care.

Currently, AOCID has three main clinical research education projects:

AO Program for Education and Excellence in Research

AO Clinical Study Center program

AOCID Clinical Research Fellowship program

AO Program for Education and Excellence in Research (AOPEER)

In 2016, the AOCID was mandated by the AO Foundation Board to take over operational lead of the AO Program for Education and Excellence in Research (AOPEER), which offers surgeons the ability to gain training and experience in all phases of clinical research.

AOPEER—designed by surgeons, for surgeons

Many surgeons receive little to no training in the principles of research, and accessing grant funding is generally not part of a surgeon’s skill set. Designed to meet this need, the AOPEER platform provides a collection of useful resources and learning opportunities for surgeons who are interested in learning how to conduct research.

AOPEER’s guidelines, courses, eLearning modules, articles, checklists, and templates cover all aspects of clinical research, including:

  • The fundamentals of research
  • Critical reading of literature
  • How to write a grant or study proposal
  • Study management
  • Data management
  • Statistics
  • How to publish your results

AOPEER taskforce

AOPEER is strategically guided by a cross-divisional taskforce:

AOCID Clinical Study Center program

The AO Clinical Study Center (AOCSC) program aims to standardize the way orthopedic and trauma centers conduct clinical research.

AOCID Clinical Research Fellowship Program

Targeted to surgeons who are looking to gain experience in all phases of clinical research, this fellowship offers opportunities to learn study planning, monitoring, data analysis, and publication.
