It is with great sadness that we inform you that AO Foundation Honorary Trustee, Emanuel Trojan from Vienna, Austria passed away on November 26 in his hometown at the age of 93.

Prof. Dr. med Emanuel Trojan was born in Prague in 1919. He graduated in 1941 from Prague Medical School, and trained as a trauma surgeon at the Accident Hospital in Vienna. He was later nominated Director and first Professor of the new Trauma Department at the University of Vienna. Trojan attended his first AO Courses in Davos during the early 1960s and became a member of Faculty on those early AO Courses in Switzerland. Soon after Trojan started teaching AO courses in Austria and was one of the founder members of AO Austria in 1969. In 1989 Trojan took up the post of Vice-President of AO International which coincided with his retirement from University. He was very active and dedicated to organizing AO teaching events in the eastern countries of Europe, such as Russia and Poland where he has had a great influence on how trauma care has evolved. Trojan was well-known for his passion for teaching and many surgeons benefited from his huge enthusiasm and expertise.

The AO Foundation has lost a passionate educator, a dedicated member and good friend. Our thoughts are with his family.
