The AO Foundation at COA

27. December 2016

Significant presence at COA 2016 in Beijing, China, from November 17–20

The AO Foundation had a significant presence at this year’s annual Chinese Orthopedic Association (COA) congress, with AOTrauma, AOSpine, and AORecon each organizing an individual, stimulating session at this event. All of these sessions were extremely well attended, and received excellent feedback from the more than 6,000 surgeons who participated in total.

AOTrauma Asia Pacific sincerely thanks all of the faculty members who were involved in the congress. Their dedication and generous support made the large-scale educational event a success.

A) 6th AOTrauma Day at COA 2016 on November 17

Chaired by XinBao Wu (AOTrauma China Council Chair), the session “New Approach and Innovation” attracted more than 4,000 surgeons. Manyi Wang (AOTrauma Asia Pacific Chair), Tian Wei (President of COA), and Nikolaus Renner (President of the AO Foundation) opened the session with welcome speeches. Eight national, nine regional, and six international faculty members moderated the intensive, full-day program, with presentations covering areas that were of high interest to the audience.

B) AOSpine on November 17

At the COA 2016 event, AOSpine conducted a successful advanced seminar. Dr Yong Qiu and Dr Wen Yuan chaired the event. 11 local faculty members and three guest lecturers delivered a fantastic four-hour lecture to the 500 seated attendees, in addition to another 200 participants standing at the back of the room. It has been an honor for AOSpine to be able to work with COA in organizing the pre-congress event in 2016. The very positive feedback from participants also encourages AOSpine to work again with the COA in 2017, to create even greater success.

C) AORecon: Current Concepts in Periprosthetic Fracture Management in the Hip and Knee on November 18

AORecon sent a strong delegation of well-known international faculty from renowned teaching hospitals including the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, USA, and the Charité in Berlin, Germany to COA 2016. Chaired by Michael Huo (USA) and Yixin Zhou (China), the full day program included four sessions in hip and knee, with support from seven international and four national faculty members. The room’s 1,300 seats were completely filled.

AO Foundation booth

The AO Foundation booth was well frequented. Visitors wanted to renew their membership package, understand how to get involved with the AO, and learn about the upcoming AO education events. Most importantly, they also wanted to use the great opportunity to connect with peers.

AO would like to thank the COA for the opportunity to collaborate at this event, and for all the support that was provided, which helped to make this huge event a great success. AO looks forward to the COA in 2017.
