AO Development Incubator

Dozens of applications are received from 36 countries in second call for proposals

The AO Development Incubator, one of the main drivers of innovation at the AO Foundation, received nearly 100 applications from 36 countries in its second call for proposals of the year.

The overwhelmingly positive response to the call, which is sent out twice a year in search of innovations that have the potential to transform orthopedic and trauma surgery, demonstrates the reach of the AO Development Incubator throughout the community of surgeons across five continents.

The call is now closed.

This graphic shows the countries of origin for this round of proposals; the darker the territory, the more proposals received.

Half of the proposals covered the area of trauma surgery, while many ideas touched upon craniomaxillofacial (CMF), digital innovations and regenerative medicine.

All the proposals will be assessed in the coming months by the AO Development Incubator Board (AODIB). The proposals will be evaluated against the following criteria: clinical needs, market potential, technology, intellectual property rights, regulatory, and legal. A proportion of these proposals will be selected for the next phase, where details of the applications will be discussed after the signing of a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA). Finally, the shortlisted inventors will be invited to discuss their proposals in person with the AODIB in April 2018.

A third call for proposals is planned to be launched in March 2018. Further information will be available on the AODI web page on the launch day.
