The AO courses began in 1960 and were, at that time, a unique method of teaching with the use of hands on practical exercises. While still applicable today the change in technology and the demands of students, has encouraged us to explore and include additional methods of education delivery.

Challenges in education
To maintain a leadership role in the education of trauma surgeons and ORP, information technology and other didactic tools e.g. distant learning material, videos on the Internet, computer simulation, virtual reality etc. are already in use, or are under development to fit in with our overall education strategy. As well as providing education for students, the availability of specific seminars on teaching for teachers enhances the high quality of the faculty. However, technology will not replace the spirit of the AO community, which is developed and strengthened by the personal contacts between 'teacher' and 'pupil' at AO courses.
